Knäck Klang

An open challenge that tests the limits of Nordic voice technology.

What is Knäck Klang?

Knäck Klang is a public challenge designed to push the boundaries of Nordic voice technology. We release a set of audio clips — Swedish, Norwegian, Danish — and challenge anyone to crack them. The twist: these are not clean studio recordings. They are real-world audio with dialects, background noise, and conversational speech that breaks most transcription systems.

The challenge is open to everyone: researchers, hobbyists, competing teams, curious engineers. Submit your transcriptions, see how you rank, and help us map where Nordic speech technology actually stands today.

Why we built it

Benchmarks are useful, but they tend to be static. Knäck Klang is a living benchmark — a community-driven way to surface edge cases, discover new approaches, and keep ourselves honest about what works and what doesn't.

We wanted a way to:

  • Test real-world performance — not just lab accuracy, but how systems handle the messy reality of Nordic speech
  • Engage the community — open challenges attract diverse approaches we would never think of ourselves
  • Build a shared understanding — when hundreds of people attempt the same clips, patterns emerge that no single team could find alone

How it works

  1. Visit knack.klang.ai
  2. Listen to the audio clips
  3. Submit your best transcription
  4. See how your accuracy compares to others

No sign-up required. No API key. Just listen and type.

What we are learning

Every round of Knäck Klang teaches us something new. Certain dialect clusters are consistently harder than others. Human transcribers outperform machines on some clips but not others. And the gap between "good enough" and "actually correct" is wider than most people assume.

These insights feed directly back into our other projects — improving Klang STT, refining our training data, and shaping the direction of Klang Dictate.
